Welcome to my fly fishing blog/website. I am a member of the Simms, Sage, Rio and Rainy's Flies guide programs and use their gear and equipment exclusively.
Guiding Service
Fly fishing for trout on Southeast Minnesota's Root and Whitewater river systems. I have over 40 years experience fly fishing and over 25 years guiding both beginning and advanced fly fishermen.
Both the Root and Whitewater rivers flow through SE Minnesota's driftless area. We fish for brook, brown or rainbow trout and have a fantastic variety of streams and rivers to choose from in those systems. The typical day depends on your skill level and goals. If you are a beginner, we can review your casting, discuss the set-up and how to approach the river. If you are more advanced, the day is yours and depending on the season, we will discuss what hatches to look for and plan accordingly. If you have your own rod & reel you are free to bring them along or I can supply the equipment using Sage Rods & Reels spooled with Rio Fly Line. My primary goal is for you to enjoy your day and time on the water.
If you are visiting the Twin Cities or the Rochester area, I have Simms Waders and Boots available for rental for an additional $50.00 per day. I am using new model Headwaters Gortex waders and Vapor Boots. E-mail me at Bob7336@gmail.com or call 952-797-2600.

Oregon Steelhead Trip
This years Oregon Steelhead trip was from 02/17/11 - 02/20/11.
Day 1 was a Spey Rod Casting Class put on by The Fly Shop in Welches, OR. I've been struggling with my spey casting so I thought this would be a good idea. Josh, Marcy & Travis did a great job with an hour in the shop, going over some basics, and the majority of the day on the Sandy River. I did learn some of the basics but now have to put theory to action.
Day 2 was a guided trip by Brian Silvey (http://www.silveysflyfishing.com/). Brian is an accomplished fly tyer, spey caster and guide. We met at the hotel at 5:00 am and fished the entire day. Brian was very patient with my casting, correcting and commenting all day...... Hooked two bright silver steelhead and could not have been happier with the fish, the day and the guide. Anyone looking to fish the Sandy or the Deschutes Rivers should get in touch with Brian.
Day 3 was spent on the Wilson River by the coast. Tried many different spots with both the indicator and spey rod. Zero fish, but more learning is needed on this river. I'm sure that there were fish in the system.
Day 4 happened because my flight was canceled due to weather in Minnesota. Spent the day on the Trask River. Same as the Wilson, spey and indicator. Zero fish for me, but there were some reports of other anglers doing better.
Gear Update: The Sage Z-Axis 8134-4 worked out fine but was a bit much for Oregon Rivers. A better rod would be the Z-Axis 8136-4. So, that will be the next piece of gear to add to the arsenal. My snappy new Simms G-4 Pro jacket worked out great as all Simms gear does. Next time I do not need to pack 4 rods. The key word is down-size.
Summary: I love Oregon, the scenery, rivers and fish. I will be back!
